What Are the Requirements for Car Insurance in Detroit?

Michigan state law requires drivers in Detroit to carry minimum coverage at the following limits:2

  • $100,000 for bodily injury, total per accident
  • $50,000 for bodily injury, per person per accident
  • $10,000 for property damage per accident
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage, unless you are covered by Medicare parts A & B
You’re required to have both bodily injury liability and property damage liability coverage as part of your Michigan car insurance policy. And for PIP coverage, drivers can choose from different coverage options instead of carrying unlimited coverage. This is due to a Michigan law that went into effect in 2020, requiring car insurance companies to reduce average health insurance premiums for PIP coverage for eight years.3

Other types of coverage, like comprehensive coverage, collision insurance and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, aren’t required by law.
