driver enjoying a road trip while protected by emergency roadside assistanceImagine you’re heading out for an errand and your car won’t start. Or you run over a nail on your way home and get a flat tire. We’re here to help you when you have car trouble. Roadside assistance provides services like:
If you find yourself stranded on the side of the road or just need to get your car from your driveway to a repair facility, we’ll help you get your car towed up to 100 miles.
Even the most prepared drivers sometimes run out of gas. We’ll send a tow truck with gas to get you on your way.
AARP members don’t need to feel deflated by a flat tire. One of our emergency roadside assistance customer service representatives will send someone to fix the tire. And if it needs to be replaced, we include towing in your roadside assistance coverage.
Roadside assistance covers you if you have a dead battery. After you make a service call, we’ll send someone out to jump your car. And, if that doesn’t work, we can help you get the battery replaced, usually right then and there. Any repairs done at the site of your car’s breakdown are included, although the cost of a new battery itself is not.
We’ve got you covered if you lock your keys in your car or drop them down a storm drain. Call RESCUE 1-800® at 800-322-7789 and we’ll send a locksmith to help you.

Frequently Asked Questions About Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance is an optional coverage you can add to your auto policy as long as you have comprehensive coverage on your vehicle. There are factors to consider when deciding if you want to add roadside assistance to your policy, including:

  • Vehicle age: If you have an older car, you may worry it’s going to break down. However, even newer cars can experience flat tires and other issues that may require roadside assistance.
  • Driving distance: Do you frequently use your car for travel? Do you commute to work? Even if you aren’t driving far, you could still end up with a dead battery or flat tire.
  • Convenience: Do you belong to a motor club that provides roadside assistance? Many insurance companies also offer this service. It might be easier to add roadside assistance coverage from your auto insurance company instead.
  • Cost: Since this coverage is optional, there is a charge to add it to your existing policy. After you get a quote, you’ll need to decide if it fits into your budget. Also consider the amount you’d need to pay out of pocket if you didn’t have the coverage.
Whether you’re stranded on the highway or just need a quick lift to get your car out of your driveway, roadside assistance from The Hartford includes towing to the nearest repair shop, up to 100 miles.
Since roadside assistance is an optional benefit you can purchase with various coverage limits, the price will change person-to-person.
It’s best to contact your insurance company if you have questions on how many times you can use roadside assistance. At The Hartford, this coverage allows for three disablements for each vehicle on your policy on a six-month policy term and six disablements on a 12-month policy term.
Yes. Through the AARP Auto Insurance Program from The Hartford, you can get many benefits simply by being a member of AARP. Roadside assistance is just one of them.
