Montana Homeowners Insurance Coverages

couple protected by montana home insuranceHomeowners policies come standard with many types of home insurance coverage. However, you also have the option to customize your policy for more protection by adding other coverages. Homeowners insurance coverages are designed to protect your home and belongings from covered losses. For example, homeowners insurance covers disasters like:

  • Fire
  • Wind
  • Hail
  • Theft

Standard Homeowners Insurance Coverages

  • Personal property coverage to help cover costs to repair or replace damaged or destroyed personal belongings.
  • Dwelling coverage, which helps protect your home and the structures attached to it, such as your plumbing system, roof and walls.
  • Other structures coverage to help protect your property that’s not attached to your home, such as a shed or detached garage.
  • Personal liability coverage for claims alleging you’re responsible for someone else’s injury or property damage.
  • Loss of use coverage to help pay for your temporary living expenses if you’re not able to live in your home after it’s damaged by a covered loss.
  • Medical payments coverage, which helps pay for someone else’s medical bills if they get hurt on your property, up to your policy’s limits.2

Additional Recommended Coverages

The Hartford makes it easy for you to customize your homeowners insurance policy. For extra protection, you may consider adding the following home insurance coverage options:

  • Equipment breakdown coverage to help cover your repair or replacement costs if your appliances or electronics break down. It also provides coverage if you want to make “green” upgrades. It pays up to 125% of your cost to replace any covered equipment with items that are similar, but more energy efficient or environmentally friendly. Keep in mind that this coverage does not include normal wear and tear.
  • Valuable items blanket for extra protection on more expensive items. For example, if your insured jewelry gets stolen, this coverage can help cover the costs to replace it.
  • Additional Limits coverage to help cover your costs to rebuild your home at an amount up to 125% of your policy limits if it’s a total loss. Depending on where you live, your policy can cover your costs up to 150% of your coverage limits.
  • “New for Old” Protection, ‡‡ which helps replace your destroyed belongings with new ones of the same quality.
  • Reimbursement for replacing locks if your keys get lost or stolen. This coverage pays up to $500 to replace locks, with a $100 deductible.
  • Identity fraud expense coverage, which reimburses you for out-of-pocket expenses up to certain limits to help you recover after fraud or identity theft.
  • Disappearing Property Deductible,‡‡  which reduces your deductible every year when you go three consecutive years without having an insurance loss.
Remember that homeowners insurance policies don’t cover flood damage. Instead, you’ll need to purchase a separate flood insurance policy to stay protected in these situations. As long as your community is part of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), you can get coverage.***
